I suggest we make a section purely for the injustices and corruptions of the current gov't, which would include imagery of broken down infrastructure, cop assault tapes, and whatever else one can find.

Injustice section Empty Let's hold off on that.

Poiting out injustice can do a really great job of motivating people to do something about the injustice.

But right now, we're working with a very small group of already motivated people. More dangerously, we're working with a group of largely directionless people. If you motivate them without a clear plan of action, that motivation will either be wasted, or worse, misguided and transformed into something terrible by an outside influence (see the Tea Party for example.)

Let's wait until our goals and plans are much more clear, and our interested member base is much larger before we start to list our grievances. And if you really want to "find some injustice," just read reddit.

How close to reddit do we want to keep this thing. I suppose you mean to keep it close while we nurture the ideas and then branch out. It is very early, I agree. Don't want to get off topic immediately.

Injustice section Empty Reddit is, um... well...

Post  Kourmanaev Tue Jun 14, 2011 11:50 am

The signal-to-noise in Reddit can be cumbersome, and the voting/karma system tries to overcome that by being a crowdsourced form of content filtering.

And for the mostpart, it works pretty okay.

But the format of Reddit isn't always really conducive to a political discussion, and certainly not to the organization of people, resources, tasks, and goals.

It's great when the most popular content floats to the top, but when a conversation needs to happen over time, Reddit tends to falter. Early (good) comments float to the top on upvotes, and later comments never really get a chance to see any traffic, and they stay unnoticed, despite their potential quality.

For the sort of conversation that needs to happen to make a political movement work, you want:

1. An IRC Channel. This is for new ideas, and conversations that MIGHT be stupid or bad. You want this to generate lots and lots of new ideas, good and bad, and fight it out on IRC to determine what's good enough to go into great detail on. Which brings us to...

2. A forum. This is for somewhat fleshed-out conversations about the group, things that we agree are good ideas, but need their details hashed-out a little more. Probably things that were brought up on IRC with a large number of people contributing to the conversation. These can then be taken to the forum for a more detailed and formal discussion. Once that's formalized and finalized into a polished idea, you can post it to...

3. A Wiki. This is for polished ideas to give the group a very quick summary of what's been done, what direction we're headed, and what needs to be done regarding real, finalized, polished objectives. Keep in mind this is primarily for the group, since some of the things on the Wiki will probably fail, and are subject to change (though not nearly as flexible as the forums, or an IRC conversation). Once the ideas and headlines in the Wiki produce real, measurable results, then they can be presented to the public, formally, via...

4. A Webpage. This is the public face of the organization, showcasing real progress, some plans that are clean and solid enough to go public with, and positive enouragement for people to become new members (think "look at all we have done, all we can do" rather than "look at all the bad things in the world, aren't they lousy? let's do something!").

Great post Kourmanaev.

Nicely detailed procedure of making the best use of different online media to effect the change we all agree needs to happen.

Going back to the social injustices thing, I think we should at least start working on building a good list of cited examples on how the system has failed us so in the future we can use it on a wiki or webpage. Might as well start right now because I fear we might bore ourselves to death just focusing on coming up with our goals/objectives. That stuff takes time.
